Hanover has adopted some tough new bylaws.
Hanover is sending out a strong message to landlords — make sure there are no grow-ops or drug labs on your property or youll be on the hook for a big bill.
Land owners will now be the responsible for the costs associated with clean up and inspection of grow houses and clandestine laboratories on their property.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says the bylaw is going to make landlords a lot more accountable.
Maskell calls it a matter of public safety and Fire Chief Ken Roseborough agrees.
He says grow ups and clandestine laboratories create substantial health and safety risks to not only the occupants but also emergency response personal.
Hanover also passed a bylaw to prohibit excessive fortification in homes and lands.
This covers everything from bars on the windows to booby traps in the backyard.
Roseborough says the fortification bylaw is more of a proactive measure.
He says while this is not an issue now it could be in the future.
The Hanover Fire and Police Departments collaborated on the new bylaws.
