Saugeen Shores councillor Luke Charbonneau, representing the Saugeen Township ward, is going to run for deputy mayor of the municipality.
Charbonneau — who filed his papers last Friday — believes it’s time to have a new generation of leadership in Saugeen Shores.
He says his platform is based on three priorities.
One calls for establishing the position of a Economic Development Officer for the municipality to help build the economy of the town in the future.
He says as Deputy Mayor he would also work to keep tax increases in check so that residents would have more disposable income to fuel the local economy.
Charbonneau says he’d also like to see a concerted effort to revitalize the beach front in Saugeen Shoes.
He says he would also continue to work on the downtown improvement plan of Port Elgin, but would like to extend it to downtown Southampton as well.
Charbonneau has served as a councillor in Saugeen Shores since 2006.
He is co-owner of Hi Berry Farms on Highway 21.
Charbonneau has started a website at lukecharbonneau.com
The current deputy mayor is Doug Freiburger who has also filed nomination papers to run for the position again.
The municipal election is slated for this October.
The mayor, deputy mayor, vice-deputy mayor are elected at large while councillors are elected on a ward system in Saugeen Shores.
