Property taxpayers in Brockton are getting off easy this year.
Mayor Charlie Bagnato says Council is set to increase taxes by just 1 percent, when members finalize the numbers at tonight’s meeting.
That compares with a roughly 8 per cent increase a year ago.
In 2009, Brocktons’ OPP contract was renewed for 5 years and there was a big increase in the cost of policing which helped push up the tax rate.
For 2010, Bagnato says Brockton did not lose any transfer money from Queens Park like many other municipalities did — so balancing the books was easier for the town.
No layoffs were needed as a result of the tight budgeting, and the Mayor says the only increase was because of wage increases for staff.
For the average taxpayer in Brockton, Mayor Bagnato says the tax increase is only about 10 dollars for 2010.
