There have been more break-ins on the Bruce Peninsula this year than in the past.
Bruce Peninsula OPP Constable Dave Meyer says that there have been almost 50 break-ins to homes and cottages so far in 2010.
And with cottage owners coming back to the area, Meyer says police are expecting that number to rise.
Meyer says cash, liquor, and jewellery are some items thieves often look for.
Meyer adds that if your cottage is broken into don’t clean up — call the police immediately.
Meyer tells us a recent break and enter was solved due to fingerprints and it makes the job for police much easier if you don’t clean the home.
He adds you should also take an inventory of what has been stolen — and if you have a serial number for a product, you have a better chance on having it returned.
Meyer says the best ways to prevent break-ins are to keep your house well lit so neighbours can see your place.
Also making sure your doors have good locks.
Meyer adds if you are going away for a long period of time, take your valuables with you.
