A Port Elgin woman is being honoured by the Lifesaving Society for her aquatic volunteer work.
Shanna Reid is the Aquatic Supervisor at the Port Elgin Centennial Pool and has been awarded the first “Centenary Medal.”
Reid says last year the Canadian Lifesaving Society celebrated their 100th year and now the society is awarding individuals who have played a part in their achievements over the last 100 years.
Reid received the medal at last months Annual General Meeting and says it was really an honour.
She says she was very surprised since she had never heard of the medal before and adds being recognized by peers is really something.
Reid says she has been volunteering for the Society for over 20 years and has been managing the Canadian Lifesaving Team for the last four years.
She says the team travels the world and goes to events similar to a swimming competition.
Reid says the difference is their competitions simulate rescuing a person or the use of equipment.
She says she really loves the sport aspect as well as the leadership development.
