The first ever Saugeen Shores Relay for Life last year was not only record-setting, it was award-winning.
The 2009 Life Leadership Committee has won the Canadian Cancer Society’s Southwestern region, “Celebrating Teamwork Award.”
Co-chair of last year’s event Nancy MacLeod says they’re thrilled with the recognition.
She admits they didn’t know they were being nominated for the award or that there was even such an award.
MacLeod says they judges were probably quite impressed with the committee but also with the way the community of Saugeen Shores came together to make it the success it was.
The event last year raised over $175,000 for cancer research with 56 teams taking part.
MacLeod says the organizing committee has been busy the past two months, getting ready for this year’s event which has some challenging goals.
They hope to have 60-teams participating and to raise 200 thousand dollars.
The 2011 event takes place on Friday, July 9th at the track oval behind Saugeen District Secondary School.
The regional award the local group has won, will be presented at the Bluewater Unit’s Volunteer Recognition Event to be held in Owen Sound on May 13th.
