Owen Sound’s new zoning bylaw was passed by city council on Monday night, the culmination of 14 months of work.
It replaces an old bylaw which was adopted in 1985.
Due to various amendments over the years, it gradually became too complex and not user-friendly.
Staff worked with consultants to update the bylaw which helps the city manage the development of land and what it can be used for.
The bylaw won’t affect existing buildings, although some city residents were surprised to find that an updated hazard zone goes right through their properties.
Building in the hazard zone will not be permitted.
Housing advocates will be happy to note that many property owners will now be permitted to create new apartments in their single-detached homes.
The public process including two open houses and a public meeting with close to a hundred submissions made by residents.
