Students playing with lego – not usually seen as a school event – but today a robotics challenge happening in Owen Sound is just that.
The 11th annual Bluewater District School Board Robotics Challenge is going on today at West Hill Secondary school and involves seven area high schools.
The students have built robots from lego kits and they will compete in several competitions in several age groups.
Training teacher and one of the organizers of the event Ken Cormack says the robots are about the size of a shoe box and students get very creative.
Cormack says one of the events is a sumo series when one robot tries to knock another out of an area.
Another is a ping pong bot competition when robots sort ping pong balls according to black or white.
Cormack says some students work solo – others as a team but all learn the creative and technical angle of the event.
Cormack says students pick up the computer programming end of the competition fairly quickly.
He expects close to 100 students will participate.
Cormack says the event runs from 10 AM and awards are presented around 1:45 PM.
It is open should the public wish to stop around and see the competitions.
