The United Way of Bruce Grey is co-ordinating support for the victims of Mondays apartment fire in Owen Sound.
10 families were left homeless by a blaze on 11th Street A West that resulted in 750 thousand dollars in damage.
Executive Director of the United Way, Francesca Dobbyn, says they are working with the owner of the building, Barrys Construction, to co-ordinate support.
Dobbyn tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it is an unusual move for the organization, and adds the Red Cross normally would help fire victims.
However the Manager of the Red Cross, Stephanie Murray, is away and the United Way was asked to step in.
Dobbyn cautions that families need time to find new permanent accommodation before they can accept donations of furniture and other household goods.
Safe ‘N Sound will co-ordinate the donations of goods, such as clothing and at (519) 470-7233.
The immediate need according to Dobbyn is personal items — such as clothing, toiletries, food, the basic day to day items.
The United Way is working with the various agencies involved in housing, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability and many more, to offer the maximum support with minimal running around for the fire victims.
Donations for the fire victims can be made at any TD Canada Trust Branch or any Meridian Credit Union Branch, donations by VISA or MasterCard can be made by calling 519 376 1560 during regular office hours.
Donations can also be made in person at the United Way office 380 9th Street East Owen Sound.
And starting on Friday morning — Bayshore Broadcasting in Owen Sound will also accept cash donations for the fire victims.
