All four contractors — ready to start work on the multi-million dollar sewer project north of the Saugeen River in Southampton — now have an understanding of the heritage protocol should they uncover artifacts in their digs.
A special meeting was held Monday morning to bring the four contractors working on the job, up to speed on the protocols that need to be followed if they discover any unusual during the digging up of the roads.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith says that is exactly what happened late last week on South Rankin Road when construction was halted in that area.
Smith believes the artifacts, some dating back several centuries, were uncovered in the area near the mouth of the Saugeen River but he doesn’t believe any bones were unearthed.
The Saugeen Ojibway Nation set up a traditional sacred fire late last week near the cordoned-off sites.
The sacred fire will come to an end at 8 AM Tuesday with a special ceremony.
Smith says all four contractors will be on the job this week.
