Owen Sound Police Service is warning the public about the newest phishing scam on the Internet.
This one, allegedly comes from Facebook.
Inspector Stephen MacKinnon says if you receive an e-mail with a subject line, “Facebook Password Reset Confirmation Customer Support” — do not open it and delete it immediately.
MacKinnon says the fake e-mail from Facebook has an attachment that is a zip file — which is really a virus that targets Windows and steals usernames and passwords.
Owen Sound Police became aware of the latest scam, when members of the force received the e-mails at work.
Inspector MacKinnon tells Bayshore Broadcasting News every day people fall prey to these scammers.
He says one of the easiest ways to recognize a scam e-mail is to carefully read the body of the e-mail for poor grammar.
MacKinnon says never open e-mails or attachments that are unexpected or from people you do not recognize.
Viewing the attachment could launch an attack on your system.
Also, he says you should have the most up-to-date security software suite installed on your computer, including anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall protection.
