A new noise control bylaw will soon be in effect in Saugeen Shores.
Police Chief Dan Rivett has presented council with recommended changes.
He says an update was needed because the current bylaw is almost 10 years old – it was passed in July of 2001.
Rivett says two public meetings were held and it was determined there must be a balance between the rights of residents and the rights of businesses.
He says it was also recognized that Saugeen Shores relies heavily on the tourism industry.
Rivett says with those points in mind – the biggest change deals with amplified music outdoors.
Amplified music outside now has to be shut off at 10 PM Sunday to Thursday, but it can continue until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays in non-residential areas.
The current bylaw prohibits sound after 11 PM.
Rivett adds the fines have also been doubled for commercial establishments from 105 dollars to 210.
Rivett says another proposed change will deal with loud speakers at drive thru restaurants.
He says the speaker must operate at a level where it cannot be clearly audible on a neighbouring property.
Council is expected to pass the new noise control bylaw at their next meeting on April 12th.
