About 100 high school students from Grey Bruce will compete Friday in the 2010 Regional Technological Skills Challenge.
It is taking place at four locations in the region — at the Bruce Technology Skills Training Centre in Tiverton and at Georgian College, Salon Sisu and the Tommy Holmes Armoury in Owen Sound.
John Diefenbaker Tech-Career Teacher Paul Messerschmidt says there are many different competitions for students.
They include automotive, carpentry, culinary, electrical, hairstyling, precision machining, small powered equipment and welding.
13 area high schools are competing with 23 judges and over 40 sponsors.
Messerschmidt adds the competitions can be quite entailed as there are some written components as well as hands on.
In carpentry the students will be judged on precision and in culinary they will be judged on excellence and professionalism as preparation for employment.
Messerschmidt adds the students level in trades careers has increased over the years.
When students compete — they receive a certificate and Messerschmidt says they can then add to their portfolio when looking for a job.
If students place in this regional tech challenge — they then move on to the northern qualifiers in Barrie in April, then the Ontario event in May and even the country wide challenge which will be held in May in Kitchener.
