West Grey continues to explore the idea of bringing Korean incinerator technology to the municipality.
Mayor Kevin Eccles recently went on a fact finding trip to Korea to learn more about the waste-to-energy project.
Eccles says Korea has developed a waste management system where incinerators burn garbage and turn it into steam power that can then generate electricity.
He adds the steam is also used in Korea to heat greenhouses and he sees that as the test project to go ahead in West Grey first.
Eccles believes it’s very important to begin exploring new waste management systems and says simply burying garbage in the ground won’t work forever.
He says this is an opportunity to both manage garbage and turn it into something useful.
Eccles says Korea has used this system for 30 years now and they’ve become one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world in this area.
Eccles says while he continues to explore the possibilities it will be at least 18 months to two years before an incinerator goes ahead in West Grey, if it ever does.
