Residents are being asked to sound off about a controversial recommendation from an International Joint Commission study, to do nothing to reduce the water flow through the St. Clair River.
The Upper Great Lakes Study Board study claims that is really having no impact on declining water levels in Georgian Bay and Lake Huron.
However, a study commissioned by the group Georgian Bay Forever finds the exact opposite and says measures must be taken right away to slow the outflow from the upper lakes and Georgian Bay.
The IJC is holding a special public meeting tonight in Midland for people to comment on its report on water levels.
Mary Muter, from the group ‘Georgian Bay Keeper’ says its vital for people to get out and question the IJC’s findings that nothing be done to slow the outflow from the St. Clair River.
She says because there are conflicting reports on the cause of low water levels, and so much controversy surrounding this issue the IJC has decided not to accept the board report without first hearing from the public.
Muter says the fact the IJC Commissioners have not accepted the recommendations of the special Lakes Study Board shows there is a chance they could change their mind on the need for control measures in the St. Clair River.
She says failure to act quickly will result in water levels in Georgian Bay declining even further and that will have a huge negative impact on the environment and the economy of the region.
Tonight’s meeting goes at 7 PM in the Bill Thompson Room at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre in Midland.
