It wasn’t exactly a ‘dip’ in Georgian Bay — but participants of this year’s Polar Bear dip in Owen Sound still got cold and wet.
The 11th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Bear Dip raised a record amount on Saturday and attracted its highest numbers yet in particpants and crowds.
There were 75 brave souls who signed up for the event raising more than 13 thousand dollars.
St. Mary’s High School won top honours for best group participation with 31 students raising more than 42 hundred dollars.
Bayshore Broadcasting personalities Bob Wallace, Jamie Johnston and Corey Laycock also raised about 2 thousand dollars for the cause.
Ironically, it was ice that stopped the dip from happening in the actual bay.
Organizer Sergeant Ted Kitto says the pack ice floated into the harbour Friday night and made conditions impossible — so the fire department came to the rescue and set up one of their hoses as a sprinkler.
The money raised in the event goes to help local Special Olympians travel and take part in various competitions throughout Ontario.
