There is a big step to take before Saugeen Shores Council can give the green light to install sewers in Southampton north of the Saugeen River.
An agreement has to be in place between council and the Saugeen Ojibway Nations.
That’s because some of the work is taking place on aboriginal lands.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee says the turn around time is too fast.
He says while it’s likely the agreement will be place by Monday March 15th, as hoped by council, not all the pieces will be in place.
Kahgee says the First Nations should have been contacted months before the project was a glimmer in the eye of council.
That’s because there are several concerns needing to be addressed, including the impact on fisheries and those of an archeological matter.
Kahgee says there may potential burials – and how those are dealt with need to be figured out.
He says while all of the details won’t be ironed out in time for the meeting, he believes enough of the ground work will be in place so council can move ahead on the project.
If the agreement is approved, it’s believed tenders will be awarded for the four sections of the total 20.1 million dollar project at Monday’s meeting.
