Some residents in Markdale are trying to stop a proposal for a Tim Horton’s restaurant — for a second time.
Ray and Dawn Dawe and number of other residents voiced their opposition to the proposal back in 2008 and the project didn’t go anywhere.
Now the same developer is back with a plan to build a 28 hundred square foot Tim Horton’s in a residential area at Highway 10 and Victoria Street.
The only thing that has changed is the developer has completed a traffic study and Grey Highlands Council will look at that study at its meeting today.
But Ray Dawe says they traffic study doesn’t change anything and they are still opposed to a Timmie’s in their residential neighbourhood.
He also notes the proposal includes a traffic light and the construction of a mini mall as a second phase.
But Dawe fears a traffic light only two blocks away from the only traffic light in Markdale would create heavy traffic congestion.
He also feels they don’t need a mini mall since there are about 10 empty storefronts downtown and plenty of restaurants and grocery stores.
Dawe says they are not opposed to a Tim Horton’s in Markdale — they are just opposed to the location.
He feels the developer should look at other spots in Markdale — either at the north end or south end of town.
Grey Highlands has also scheduled a public meeting for the Tim Horton’s proposal and it will be held next Monday March 8th at 7 PM.
