A children’s mental health organization wants to form stronger ties with schools in Bruce and Grey Counties.
The FAN or Friends and Neighbours Club is offering its services free to all schools.
The organization uses different methods of reaching children whether through puppets or talk forums to discuss mental health issues.
By spending more time in schools — Coordinator Jackie Ralph says the Fan Club will be able to help kids cope with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues.
She says many parents would be shocked to discover how much anxiety children carry around with them.
Mental health studies show almost half of young students struggle with anxiety.
The program also helps identify students who may be suffering with serious mental health issues including suicidal thoughts.
Ralph says the FAN Club has only visited 50 per cent of the Catholic schools and 20 per cent of public schools in Grey Bruce.
She feels that is not enough – she wants every school in Grey and Bruce County to receive a visit.
Meanwhile the FAN Club has recently received a 59 thousand dollar health grant and is eager to put it to use.
The money will be used to promote physical as well as mental health.
Ralph encourages schools to invite the FAN Club to visit their school.
