The company I work for, Bayshore Broadcasting, preceded by Grey-Bruce Radio and CFOS Radio, turns 70 years of age on March 1st.
As part of the celebrations, we’ve dug into what exists of our archives to find memorable and significant audio and supplemented it with interviews with former staff and alumni from the company.
In the sports department, naturally the Cresents of 1950 and the Mercurys of 1950-51 still hold immense value in the community and in our radio memories.
The other ” sports ” clip that garners immediate attention is an audio clip from Brad Underwood talking about the 1991 ISC World Fastball Championships in Sioux City, Iowa.
On the final day of the tournament, Owen Sound Canadian Tire faced Rohnert Brothers from California in the semifinal game.
Underwood was the pitcher for the Tiremen and got locked into an endless pitching battle.
In the 22nd inning at the plate, he singled, stole second and scored on a base hit to give Owen Sound a 1-0 lead, a lead he would turn to victory with a 22nd shutout inning over the Californians.
But the day didn’t end there.
Seemingly just moments later, Underwood and the Tiremen were back on the diamond in the Championship Final against Penn Corp.
This time the scoreless battle extended to the 10th inning when Underwood and the Tiremen were touched for 2 runs and couldn’t generate anything themselves, losing by a narrow 2-0 score in extra innings.
There have been tremendous sports memories over 70 years of our broadcast history.
The 1991 ISC Championships remain among the greatest
