It’s a sure sign that spring is just around the corner.
The Grey Bruce Maple Syrup Producers Association is holding its annual first maple tapping event on Saturday.
President Nick Bereznick says this is a significiant event as it marks the begriming of the first harvest of the new crop year, with the harvest being sap to produce maple syrup.
Tomorrows event taking place a Uncle Richards Maple Syrup Supplies on Glenelg Sideroad 49 near Durham.
Bereznick says the syrup industry plays a big role to the agricultural economy of Grey Bruce and also provides a substantial form of imcome for many farmers who also have suger bushs.
He says locally there has been a big increase in the number of producers to the point that this year there will be about 30 thousand taps producing syrup this year.
Bereznick says the outlook for the syrup producers is very bright this year with last years trend of higher volume coupled with higher prices continuing.
He says that a result of pent up demand for maple syrup not just in Ontario but around the world as more and more people prepared to pay top dollar to get the best quality syrup.
