Collingwood council has taken further action to protect a heritage school in the town.
Council has a passed a by-law to designate the former Connaught School, now the Contact Centre, as a heritage building.
Vice Chair of the Heritage Advisory Committee, Margaret Mooy says the by-law means the exterior of the property at 125 Napier Street is protected and only the interior can be changed.
Mooy says this may raise the value of the property if the town decides to sell it.
Council has also approved the tax refund program.
Mooy says the program will help owners of designated properties defray some of the costs involved which are more than they are for other homes.
The province is matching Collingwood’s contribution of ten percent which to taxpayers amounts to about 23 cents per 100 thousand dollars of property assessment.
The week of February 15th is Heritage Week.
