What a way to celebrate the start of the Winter Olympic Games — by getting out and getting active at Winterama today.
Winterama is the major fundraiser go towards projects for children and youth in Grey Bruce — where participants can skate, snowmobile, snow shoe or cross country ski after gathering pledges.
100 per cent of the proceeds from Winterama go towards child and youth projects.
50 per cent is distributed through area rotary clubs of Port Elgin , Southampton, Tara, Shallow Lake Hepworth and Wiarton.
The other 50 per cent is distributed through the United Way Rotary Children’s Fund.
Franchesca Dobbyn United Way Executive Director says it is a great event for the whole family to get involved in with the funds going to very needy causes like Keystone and Prance.
Dobbyn says Winterama is unique to this area as a fundraiser and celebrates winter for all ages.
Dobbyn says there are two locations for registration and events – the Shallow lake Community Centre and at the Plex in Port Elgin.
Skiing and Snowshoeing start at 10 AM at the Sawmill Ski Trails just east of Hepworth. Registration at the Shallow Lake Community Centre prior.
Skating is at the Plex in Port Elgin starts at 10:30 AM and at the Shallow Lake Community Centre at 11 AM.
There is a minimum 25-dollar pledge to participate and pledge sheets race available at the United Way office in Owen Sound or on their website.
The event is capped off with lunch at the Shallow Lake Community Centre – and awards ceremony and prizes.
