It’s not for the faint-of-heart — but a Wiarton man is about to embark on the race of his life.
Jack Van Dorp — who works for the County of Bruce — is in New Zealand for the annual World Multisport Championship race.
It’s a gruelling one day, 240 kilometre event that takes participants from one coast of New Zealand to the other.
Van Dorp says the event features mountain running, road cycling and white water kayaking.
He says the more than 200 participants will be starting at sea level and crossing the southern Alps up 700 metres of elevation before kayaking back down through several gorges.
It’s his first time at the event — and Van Dorp says while its a bit daunting — he really has no expectations other than doing the best he can.
He says it’ll likely take him a good three to four weeks to fully recover from the event.
The race actually begins today and continues into tomorrow.
