More than 30 Sauble Beach residents filled the South Bruce Peninsula Council Chambers to voice their opposition to the Sauble Beach Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The third reading for the Sauble Beach sewage system by-law has been deferred to next Tuesday at the Committee of the Whole meeting.
At Tuesday night’s meeting — Sauble Beach resident and owner of Winding River Campground, Tim Cosstick made a presentation to council.
Cosstick says the wastewater treatment plant will be a direct detriment to his campground.
Cosstick claims he and other residents have concerns about fumes, noise and environmental effects and feels council is rushing the decision.
Cosstick says they are not opposed to sewers — but they do not want the plant to be in their backyard.
The municipality has purchased land for the water treatment plant and it’s located just behind Fedy Drive — off of D-Line in Sauble Beach.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says they deferred the third reading to next week so residents can hear an up to date report from the engineers.
Councillor Mark Wunderlich agrees the residents concerns need to be addressed — but he feels they are going over the same arguments again and again.
Wunderlich says they need to get the project in the ground for the simple reason that with every day that goes by — the project gets more expensive.
The current estimated cost of the sewage system is 10.1 million dollars.
South Bruce Peninsula has secured 6.24 million dollars in government funding — leaving almost 4 million to be covered by the users.
