Brockton council is considering getting into the Hydro business.
The province is offering 20 year contracts to buy solar energy at 80 cents a kilowatt hour.
Mayor Charlie Bagnato compares it to a loss-leader in a grocery store, where the province is paying way more than the Hydro is worth, in order to get more green energy into production.
Brockton council will be considering at least a couple of the solar energy units, in it’s budget discussions March 8th and 9th.
They are small units — approximately 17 feet by 35 feet — at a cost of 100 thousand dollars.
Bagnato says they produce only 10 kilowatts of energy, but with the province paying 80 cents a kilowatt — it would pay for itself in seven years.
The Brockton Mayor predicts there will be hundreds of these solar units set up in the province over the next couple of years, in fact he has had several inquiries from farmers in the area.
Bagnato says the town is hoping to offset electricity costs at some some facilities, like the water and sewage treatment plant.
