School uniforms are a hot topic at Owen Sounds St. Marys High School.
Parents of St. Marys High School students will be receiving a call soon.
A phone survey is being conducted to gage whether or not parents are in support of school uniforms.
School Council Chair Jodi Armstrong says over the last few months St. Marys has hosted two school uniform information sessions, as well as a school uniform fashion show.
Some students have even taken it upon themselves to model the uniforms during school and have been wearing the pieces for three weeks now.
Principal Glen Miller says the uniforms will not happen without the support of parents.
He says at least 70 percent of parents must be in support of school uniforms before the school proceeds.
Miller is in favour of the school uniforms.
He says they create a sense of unity among students, they have been linked to student achievement and provide a safety feature by being able to identify anyone who doesnt belong in the school
A drop in enrollment and the cost of school uniforms are two concerns being voiced.
However after surveying other schools with uniforms staff believe enrollment will not be an issue.
As for cost – they say the uniform prices are reasonable and there will be subsidizes available.
Durhams St. Peters and Pauls elementary school is the only school within the Catholic Board with uniforms.
Miller was the principal of the school when the uniforms were introduced.
