More local efforts underway to provide aid to the victims of Haiti’s massive earthquake.
The latest group wanting to help out is the Meaford Rotary club which is accepting donations so they can send a number of Shelter Boxes to the earthquake zone.
Paul Wherle says the local club will match any donations up to a total of five thousand dollars, and with the Canadian Government matching that 10 thousand dollars that means there will be a total of 20 thousand dollars for earthquake relief.
Wherle says the Shelter box is contains a 10 person tent, blankets and ground sheets for 10, a cooking stove, water purification system and tools like hammers and saws to help the earthquake victims rebuild their homes.
He says each one of these costs about one thousand dollars and they are hoping to send 20 shelter boxes to Haiti, which will help look after about 200 people.
Wherle says the good about using the Shelter Boxes to help earthquake victims, is they are designed for the long term, not the short term relief being provided by other groups in Haiti.
He is hoping to have all the donations collected by February 15th and that means the Shelter Boxes could be on their way to Haiti by the end of the month.
He says donations can be dropped off at the Meaford Chamber of Commerce office or at the Rotary Club.
