Hanover is sticking with its controversial non resident user fees.
If you are not a Hanover resident — you will continue to pay more to swim, play ball or enrol in various Hanover recreation activities.
In a 5-2 decision — Council has voted to maintain the current 25 per cent non resident surcharge for 2010.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says without any cost sharing agreements with neighbouring municipalities, Hanover has little choice but to implement the fees.
She says it will ensure residents are not subsidizing non residents.
Councillor Selwyn Hicks voted against the user fee.
He says if Hanover is going to consider itself a regional centre, it may have to accept the costs associated with it.
He feels the economic spin offs created by non residents using town recreational facilities offset program costs.
Programs Manager Sherri Walden says the town needs to strike mutually acceptable cost sharing agreements with surrounding municipalities.
On the bright side — Hanover is not phasing in the 33 per cent non resident user fee originally planned for 2010.
Instead the town is going to maintain the current 25 per cent fee.
Over the last year Hanover has generated 27 thousand dollars from the non resident user fees.
It has come at a cost however, aquatic usage has dropped by about 12 per cent.
