A prominent Wiarton businessman who passed away in 2007 is now being remembered with a special memorial fund.
The Thomas G. Norris Helping Kids Legacy Fund was launched Friday during a ceremony at the Wiarton Hospital.
Close friend Bill Walker says the fund will be used to support underprivileged children on the Bruce Peninsula with everything from medical to sports needs.
The fund will be held in perpetuity by the Community Foundation Grey Bruce, with the interest earned each year distributed through grants.
Walker says over 16-thousand dollars have already been donated, including a five thousand dollar contribution by Bayshore Broadcasting.
Walker hope the fund will continue to grow as word spreads to the many people, businesses, and community groups that Norris touched during his life.
Walker says Norris was a community hero who made many major contributions to his beloved Bruce Peninsula.
He is perhaps best remembered for his 20 year involvement with Easter Seals, where he founded the Snowarama and Skiarama events that have generated a million dollars for children.
A plaque was also unveiled at the Wiarton Hospital today, recognizing Norris as the driving force behind fundraising for the new facility and then keeping it open.
On a professional level, Norris went from operating a single taxi to owning a school bus and transportation company that serviced the Peninsula and beyond.
Gail Norris says her late husband would have been embarrassed by all the attention, but also would have been happy that his work with special needs children continues.
Tom Norris passed away on June 4th, 2007 of a massive heart attack at the age of 68.
