The Owen Sound Celtic Festival is no more.
As we reported before Christmas — the Celtic Society was desperately looking for new board members to carry on, after most of the current members’ terms were up this year.
And while many residents came forward to help organize the next event — they weren’t willing to commit at the board level.
At after an emergency meeting this weekend — the society was officially dissolved — and with it, the ten year old Celtic Festival.
Vice Chair Tara MacKenzie says its a shame but she hopes some other spin off events might come from this.
She says many in the celtic music circles around the city would like to go back to the former Pratie Oaten event — this time in partnership with Grey Roots Museum.
The Celtic Festival is being dissolved after finally making a profit last year of seven thousand dollars which will now be distributed to agencies across the region including The Owen Sound Youth Theatre Coalition, Grey Roots, Dancing for Life, St. George’s Anglican Church, and Friends of the Leith Church.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says she was shocked to hear about the demise of an event that’s been so important to the city.
She says if anyone tried to organize an off shoot event, city officials would be more than supportive.
Lovell Stanners believes the community will respond to the news and that something can be resurrected from the ashes of the Celtic Festival.
