New equipment is on the way for the fire station in Tiverton.
Kincardine Council approved the purchase of new heavy hydraulic rescue equipment.
Fire Chief Jamie MacKinnon says due to the changing environment of today’s vehicles — which are more complex to extricate people from — firefighters need heavier, faster tools to use at the accident scene.
He says the older, manually-operated tools aren’t cutting it anymore.
The Fire Department applied a year ago to get Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) funding from the province to cover half the cost of the equipment.
MacKinnon says their application was successful.
Funds from the Harold Smith Estate fund helped purchase the equipment.
The fund was bequeathed to the municipality by the late Harold Smith of Tiverton for the purchase of new materials for the fire station.
MacKinnon says there is a fairly extensive wish list of new equipment for firefighters that hasn’t been finalized yet — but it includes new training aids.
