The 6th annual Tim Horton’s Georgian Cup Snow Cross races in Owen Sound are being postponed for two weeks.
Members of the East Side Snowmobile Club met Tuesday night and decided there simply isn’t enough snow at Victoria Park to hold the event January 16th and 17th.
Race co-chair Peter Van Dolder says as a result, they have decided to move the Snow-cross races to the weekend of January 30th and 31st this year.
Van Dolder says they rely on the city and private contractors to dump snow at Victoria Park in front of the grandstand, but only a handful of trucks have unloaded there this winter.
He says they need about 500 truckloads of snow to make a good race track and he is confident there will be enough snow on hand by the end of the month.
Van Dolder says fortunately there was an opening in the Snow-cross schedule, so racers should be able to come to Owen Sound January 30th and 31st.
Some 600 entries are expected for the extreme sport.
Over the past 30 years, the East Side Snowmobile Club has hosted snowmobile races or events.
Van Dolder says they used to have oval racing which involved icing a track but they don’t get enough cold weather to have those anymore.
