An area farmer is seeking compensation from the Hanover Walkerton Landfill Committee.
Don and Helen Waechter are upset with new restrictions that will soon be in place for their farm.
Under the expanded landfill site zoning — no one can build on any land within 500 meters of the landfill site.
This includes the back portion of the Waechter property in which they had hoped to build a future home.
The Waechter’s either want to be bought out or fairly compensated for the zoning restrictions.
Brockton Councillor Chris Peabody calls their concerns valid.
Peabody notes Brockton does have the option of passing a minor variance to allow the Waechter’s to build within the 500 meter zone.
But he is not sure however if Brockton will go this route as he suspects Hanover would oppose such a minor variance.
A few years a go a similar situation came up in which Brockton was going to allow a home to be built within the 500 meters zone — and Hanover took Brockton to the Ontario Municipal Board over it.
Peabody says the Waechter’s are not the only homeowners effected by the 500 meter buffer zone.
He thinks it would be appropriate to make them some form of an offer based of fair market value.
