Catholic students in Bruce Grey are counting calories.
The high school cafeterias at Sacred Heart in Walkerton and St. Mary’s in Owen Sound now list the calorie content of each item on their menu.
In some cases — students can learn exactly how much exercise it would take to burn off the calories with a donut or gravy soaked french fries.
Director of Education Bruce MacPherson feels it’s important students are provided with the tools they need to make healthy choices.
The change comes after a recommendation by the Ontario Medical Association to the province to introduce legislation requiring all chain restaurants and school cafeterias to list the calorie content on their menus.
MacPherson notes both Sacred Heart and St. Mary’s high schools promote healthy choices by banning all trans fats.
