If you’re heading out to fish or snowmobile on Lake Huron this winter, Police have a few reminders.
South Bruce OPP Constable Kevin Martin says the ice needs to be at least eight inches thick to be safe for sleds.
He says the colour of ice is important; clear blue ice is the strongest, white or opaque ice is much weaker.
And ice that has a honeycombed look should be avoided altogether.
Martin says that a heavy snowfall on Lake Huron insulates the ice below — which can heat it up and make it very unstable.
He add’s that the ice conditions are currently very dangerous and unstable.
