The Olympic Torch is making its way through both Grey and Bruce County today as part the cross country torch relay program.
In Saugeen Shores, CTV-TSN sports broadcaster Brian Williams will be the first to carry the torch, running alongside his grandchildren who reside in the community.
Williams has been a broadcaster at Olympic Games for more than 30 years and admits today’s experience carrying the torch will be unique for him.
When the relay started at Vancouver, Williams was on air for the arrival of the torch in Canada and he has followed the progress of the relay with great interest.
He says the principles represented by the Olympic Torch are meaningful on many levels to many people.
Williams states he knew the torch relay concept and program would be popular, but he admits he didn’t believe it would be this popular.
The Vancouver Olympic Games begin in February.
Williams believes there’s plenty to be excited about from a Canadian standpoint, and he relates the greatest anticipation lies within who will become the first Canadian to ever win a Gold Medal at an Olympics game hosted on Canadian soil.
No Canadians won gold medal in 1976 at the Summer Games in Montreal, nor at the Winter Games in Calgary in 1988.
