Trying to get teens to eat healthier is being achieved at nine high schools in Grey and Bruce.
The nine high schools including OSCVI in Owen Sound and Sacred Heart in Walkerton have been given the phase one designation through the Grey Bruce Partners in Health and the Health Unit.
Health Promoter with the Grey Bruce Health unit Crystal Ferguson says phase one means 25-percent of food choices in the cafeteria are considered healthy choices.
Ferguson says healthy choices include whole grains – vegetables and low fat milk products.
She adds the choices must be front and centre for students to see – not hidden in the back.
The reason the Health Unit is doing phases of the designation is because they don’t want to shock students into a different way of living – but slowly introduce healthy foods.
Ferguson says next fall they will once again visit area high schools to start to introduce and name phase two status.
Phase two is 50 per cent healthy choices in school cafeterias.
The complete list of highschools with the phase one designation is as follows: Bruce Peninsula District Lions Head, Georgian Bay Secondary Meaford, John Diefenbaker Hanover, OSCVI, Peninsula Shores Wiarton, Saugeen District Secondary Port Elgin, West Hill Owen Sound, St Mary’s Owen Sound, Sacred Heart Walkerton.
