More Bruce County municipalities want something done about a nasty weed.
Giant hogweed is usually seen in different municipalities in the summer — and the County wants it legally declared a noxious weed by the province so something can be done about it.
It isn’t a noxious weed officially because it isn’t considered a threat to grazing livestock.
The weed started out as an ornamental garden plant in the 19th century, but is now known to cause severe skin irritation and even permanent sensitivity to the sun if humans come in contact with it.
Huron-Kinloss passed a motion calling on the county and other municipalities to get the province to declare it an enemy under the Weed Control Act.
Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, and South Bruce have endorsed it.
Kincardine Mayor Larry Kraemer says hogweed was growing on his own property 25 years ago — and it took ten years to get rid of it.
South Bruce Mayor Bill Goetz says if it declared a noxious weed, municipalities will have more power to take the steps needed to get rid of it.
