Chatsworth’s attempts to change the way they vote in municipal elections has hit a snag.
Chatsworth is one of the lone hold outs in Grey Bruce in switching from a ward system to an at-large system of voting.
Council recently decided to change that.
However half a dozen residents have appealed the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board.
Mayor Howard Greig says that throws a wrench in the works as any changes to the electoral system for next fall — would have to be made by January 1st.
The appeal to the OMB effectively derails that.
Greg says a special meeting of council will be held next Tuesday to come up with another proposal.
He says they’ll attempt to pass a bylaw allowing for a hybrid system where the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected at large — with councillors being elected from three wards — instead of the current four.
Greig says he hopes that alleviates the residents’ concerns and they can move forward without involving the OMB.
The Mayor says he’s not a supporter of the OMB over turning municipal council decisions arrived at democratically.
