The Campbell Soup factory in Listowel has been sold to Simon Rosen, owner of Erie Meats of Mississauga, for 4.8 million dollars.
He intends to use the 298 thousand square-foot plant for cold storage for 50 to 60 million pounds of chicken and other meats destined for export around the world.
The business will be called Listowel Cold Storage and will employ about 25 people, ramping up to 70 or 80 within a few months when the plant will reach full production.
Campbell Soup opened business 48 years ago and was employing about 500 people when it announced closure of the plant in April, 2008.
Rosens plant in Mississauga employs about 530 people processing turkeys, chickens and other meats.
The Listowel plant will handle products from Erie Meats and other processors.
