A 37 thousand dollar cut to the Bruce Grey Catholic School Board’s transportation grant means more kids will be walking to school next year.
In an effort to find efficiencies the Catholic Board has revised its walking boundaries to 1.6 kilometres.
This means dozens of bussed students will be required to walk to school next Fall.
Trustee Vice Chair Bev Eckensweiler suspects resistance from some parents since many people do not like change.
She says it will just take time to get used to the arrangement.
Eckensweiler welcomes the change and says it creates a level of fairness across the School Board District.
Up until now walking boundaries vary from school to school.
She says the new Board wide 1.6 kilometre walking boundary will create a level playing field.
Eckensweiler adds that walking to and from school will benefit kids by providing them with exercise by keeping them active.
Unfortunately Eckensweiler fears that despite attempts by the School Board to notify parents about the walking boundary changes — many parents will be caught by surprise next September.
The new walking boundary maps are posted on the Catholic Board’s website at www.bgcdsb.org
