Officials are hoping to put minds at ease over the proposed expansion of the Hanover/Walkerton Landfill.
Brockton Mayor Charlie Bagnato says a public meeting will be held tonight to address the many concerns he knows are out there.
Bagnato says a group of Lake Rosalind and Marl Lake residents have made it clear they want to put a stop to the expansion.
But he says that is just not a possibility because the municipalities have a job to do and are responsible for managing waste.
Bagnato says the expansion is needed as the landfill is going to run out of space in another year or so.
When it comes to environmental concerns, Bagnato says they are doing their due diligence.
He says they have worked on the plans for five years and have done everything they can to accommodate every wish of the Ministry of the Environment.
For example – Bagnato says an expensive plastic liner will be installed at the site to keep leachate away from the Saugeen River.
The 6 million dollar, 4.1 hectare expansion would extend the life of the landfill by 20 years.
The public meeting will be held at 7 PM at the Saugeen Municipal Airport.
