Going to the museum is not supposed to be torture, but you can learn about it there.
Medieval Torture; Dark Deeds in a Dark Age is an exhibit at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton that runs until March 31, 2010.
Director Barbara Ribey says it’s an accurate, educational exhibit that cautions against the use of torture in any form, in any age.
The exhibit features 30 medieval torture instruments from a private collection.
Ribey acknowledges the exhibit could be seen as controversial, but notes it is an important facet of medieval life.
There is a warning about the mature subject matter of the exhibit and parental discretion is advised.
Ribey says she has not received much feedback on the exhibit since it started on November 26th, but notes the museum’s new Marketing and Program Supervisor starts in January and they plan to aggressively promote the exhibit at that time.
She says it has a lot of capacity to educate.
