Architects have presented their rendition of what the new three-million dollar gymnasium addition at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre will look like.
Jim Strasman of Strasman Architects presented the drawings of the addition, which includes a college-sized gymnasium, viewing area, change rooms, and an indoor walking/running track attached to the east side of the existing building.
Construction is to start in May 2010 with a target completion 10 months later.
Mayor Larry Kraemer is optimistic the project can be completed in that time because of the relatively easy construction design — but he hopes his optimism does not jinx the process.
Councillor Randy Roppel notes that 10 percent is generally the acceptable allowance for cost overruns.
Two thirds of the project is being funded by federal and provincial infrastructure money.
Strasman is optimistic that the work can be done on time, barring any disasters of strikes that could slow things down.
He notes that building trades unions are in the midst of contract talks and would prefer to see non-union contractors do the work.
An open house was held on Wednesday to give the public a chance to see what the addition will look like and to let them share comments.
Recreation Director Karen Kieffer says about 20 people showed up, and suggestions included moving handicapped parking closer to the building, and adding more arena dressing rooms.
Council has endorsed the design and is allowing the project to go to tender.
