Had a great chat not that long ago with Mike Kelly from Saugeen Shores.
Christmas is coming, as you know, but Mike may have received an early present when he was selected as the Ontario Baseball Association Coach of the Year.
Kelly, who’s been involved in Port Elgin Minor Baseball for essentially 2 decades, coached both the Saugeen Shores Peewees & the Midgets last season and both went to their respective Finals.
He admitted, there are significant differences in coaching at those two age levels, but you got the impression he truly loved it.
Kelly is very generous in his praise for the executive structure and volunteers who have kept the program vibrant.
Yes, organizers have come and executives have gone, but the program remains strong, and is a true benefit to the youngsters who participate each spring and summer.
Any advice for aspiring coaches that would allow them to be considered as a Coach of the Year candidate ?
Mike Kelly stresses the keys are found in the basics.
Teach the fundamentals, be patient, and let the kids have fun.
I go to a lot of significant minor sports events over the course of any given year; from Ringette, to hockey, to lacrosse to fastball, and too often, the environment in which the kids are playing is far too tense and professionally structured.
Sounds like Coach Mike Kelly with Port Elgin Minor Baseball has the right concept and can create a winning program in a fun atmosphere.
I’m Fred Wallace
