Right now – if mother nature cooperates – the top half of the Stokes Bay lighthouse will lift high on Saturday.
The top half is being saved by the County of Bruce to be displayed at the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre in Southampton.
The lift is scheduled to start shortly after 11 AM at the Stokes Bay site.
Tourism Manager Chris Hughes says this has been a project long in the making.
Hughes says they have been organizing the event for almost a year – and the total tab will cost 40-thousand dollars.
The tab will be covered by the County of Bruce, the Coast Guard and the Nuclear Waste Management Program at Bruce Power.
The lift had originally been set for Friday but due to the on set of snow has been postponed until Saturday.
The lift will take three trips and each will portion of the structure will be placed down two kilometres away from the pier at the parking area of Black Creek Provincial Park.
The structures will then be loaded onto a transport with a float and be brought into storage at the museum until the decision where the display will be built is decided.
Hughes is excited for the event as he says people in the area are very passionate about lighthouses – and the preservation of historical aspects of the county.
The county will be filming the event on the ground and by another helicopter following the lift helicopter.
Hughes says the public is invited to watch the lift – it will be as low flying as possible — and they can follow the list updates on twitter as well.
