The public will be brought up to speed today about what’s happening with the regional recreation centre in Owen Sound.
A special meeting of city council will take place at 1 PM today.
Councillor Jim McManaman — the chair of the Rec Centre’s steering committee — requested the meeting in an effort to inform the public of what has been taking place.
One issue is the soil problem at Victoria Park that may prevent the complex from being built as is in the desired location along 10th Street and 8th Avenue East.
McManaman says further soil testing has been done in other locations at the park, and the results will be discussed today.
If soil remediation is required, it will add at least another one million dollars to the cost of the project.
The architect and construction manager will be present and will help give direction regarding how the project should proceed.
McManaman and City Manager Jim Harrold will also talk about efforts to whittle down a funding shortfall of about 1.8 million dollars.
McManaman says the committee has been working hard to reconcile the cost of the building with the money that is or will be available.
