Formosa residents have told South Bruce Council they’re going the wrong way with a plan to make a street in their community one-way.
Earlier in November, Council told staff to prepare a by-law designating Concession 12 between Bruce Road 12 and the driveway of Immaculate Conception Church as one-way westbound.
The municipality wanted to create the one-way street in order to improve traffic safety for children walking to school.
However, resident Sally Kroeplin says it would be a major inconvenience — she would have to drive four extra blocks just to return home from the store.
Kroeplin delivered a petition to council containing over 100 names opposing the one-way plan.
Councillor Les Nichols responded by moving that plans to introduce the by-law be rescinded — and the motion carried unanimously.
Nichols says they need the support of local property owners if changes are going to work — and he thinks they understand there is a safety issue in the area.
Mayor Bill Goetz says a committee of municipal staff, council, and residents will discuss not only the one-way street option, but all of the safety issues affecting the route children use to walk to school.
Deputy Mayor Carl Zettel is suggesting a Community Safety Zone with higher traffic fines, or a crossing signal be installed.
The Bruce-Grey Catholic School Board is busing Formosa students to school this year until the issues are resolved.
