The OPP Festive RIDE program is underway in Southern Ontario.
It runs from November 27th to January 2nd, 2010.
RIDE or Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere, is a universally recognized program where officers set up a roadway and stop passing motorists to check for drinking drivers.
Western Region OPP Sergeant Dave Rektor says last year — the OPP checked nearly one million cars in southern Ontario during the RIDE program and found 319 impaired drivers.
In Grey County, the OPP pulled over nearly 17 thousand vehicles and charged 12 people with criminal code offences as a result of the RIDE checks.
So far in 2009, Grey County OPP have run periodic ride checks for over 500 hours, and 129 drivers were found to be impaired.
Sergeant Rektor says the goal of the program is to make our roads the safest in North America.
